Apple moves devices to leasing. Here is what it means for Europe.

On 28 July 2026, Apple launched Apple Upgrade in the United States: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch on a lease, iPhone from $17.99 a month, with trade-in lowering the monthly payment and an upgrade at the end of the term. The leases are provided by Klarna. It is available in the US only, for now.

The announcement matters beyond Apple. The largest consumer product company in the world has just told its customers that the sticker is not the price: you can pay for the time you use a product, hand it back, and move to the next one. When Apple normalises a way of paying, it stops being a niche and becomes an expectation.

Apple's programme sells Apple, in one market. Every other maker, retailer, telco and bank now faces customers who have seen the model and will ask for it, across every brand on the shelf and in every market they operate in.

That is the model Fairown has been running in Europe since 2019: upgrade programmes under the partner's own brand, every brand in one basket, with a regulated partner bank providing the credit and Fairown pricing and carrying the residual value. Live today in nine European markets.

The question for European makers, shops, telcos and banks is no longer whether leasing arrives in consumer products. It is whose name is on it when it does.

Published Aug 23, 2026. Programme details and partner names are as announced at the time.
